What is a VoIP?

Standing for Voice over Internet Protocol, VoIP allows businesses to make and receive both phone calls and video calls by using the internet. This technology means that the need for a traditional landline is done away with as a VoIP call bypasses this setup.

A voice-over IP call offers a wealth of benefits to businesses of all sizes. We’re going to take a look at just what you can expect from a voice phone service and why it is it’s the only way to go.

Voice over IP vs. traditional telephone systems

When you consider an ISDN phone line, this is something that is fixed to a physical location. The system uses copper wires to allow calls to be made and customers pay to lease these lines, monthly, and then also pay for any calls that are made.

With VoIP, you’re not tied to a specific location. That’s because there is no need to tap into the copper wiring: a VoIP call is made and received over an internet connection. Come December 2025, PTSN and IDSN will be switched off and lines will be removed from service. That means that an alternative will be needed and that, superior, alternative is VoIP.

How does a VoIP call work?

When making a VoIP call, your voice is converted into a digital file. This digital file is then compressed and sent across the internet. The call is handled by your VoIP service provider. During a phone call, your conversation is sent via the use of data packets. By utilising an internet connection these can be sent around the world in less than a second.

Your VoIP call can be made by using a smartphone, a laptop or even a desktop. If you’d prefer a desktop phone, you can also find VoIP phones that operate over the internet but feature everything that you’d find on a traditional business phone.
