What is it and why does it matter?

On-premise solutions are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Businesses have realised the benefits of utilising the cloud and are rapidly making the switch. This is also true when it comes to communications and telephony. Hosted telephony (referred to as Voice over Internet Protocol, or simply VoIP) is gaining in popularity.

December 2025 is the time when the Public Switch Telephony Network (PSTN) will be switched off. What this means is that fixed lines will simply be withdrawn from service, making cloud telephony even more vital. If you’re wanting to know more about hosted telephony, and how it’s rapidly becoming a must, you’re in the right place.

Hosted telephony vs. traditional – What’s the difference?

When it comes to traditional telephone services, these are reliant upon physical copper lines. With hosted, otherwise known as IP, telephony these lines are done away with. Instead, the internet is used and this allows for voice data to be sent through the local phone exchange.

With hosted telephony, your system is cloud-based (hence it often being referred to as cloud telephony). This means that, when it comes to making calls, you can use:

  • Mobiles
  • IP handsets
  • Desktop applications

Installing a hosted telephony solution

One of the many things that make hosted telephony such a great option is the fact that the installation process is as simple as it gets. The need for physical wires is done away with and all that is required is a stable internet connection.

As soon as your company phones have been configured, they can be moved around whenever you want them to. This ‘plug and play’ solution means that even the like of moving an office is incredibly simple as you can just take your phone with you.

The benefits of hosted telephony

The benefits of selecting a cloud telephony system are numerous. As well as offering convenience some of the other benefits include:

  • Low Cost. VoIP is a low cost alternative to the traditional telephone system
  • Higher Call Quality
  • Flexibility
  • Reliable
  • Scalable
  • Portability
Reliability

As long as you have an internet connection you can be assured that you have a working phone system. No business can afford to be without a means to communicate yet with physical systems this is always a risk: floods, fires, and thefts all pose a risk. With hosted telephony, these risks are gone.

Flexibility

If your business grows, reduces in size or even moves premises, IP telephony can change with you. Scaling up or down, and even relocating, is easy. You can even use the service for any remote workers that you may have and make it appear that they are making calls from your offices.

Cost-effectiveness

As well as offering lower call costs, hosted telephony also comes into its own when you look at one of the usual hurdles to installing a new communications system: large initial outlay. With no capital outlay, your business can save while still seeing the benefits of an upgraded system.
